I am writing to congratulate Pastor Lewis on his award from the Fairmont District LGBTQA Cooperative. Our church has always been a very welcoming place, and I for one am glad to have such a warm-hearted, morally courageous leader in our community. Let’s all give Pastor Lewis our thanks for opening our doors and encouraging us to open our hearts to all in our community.
I want to encourage everyone to write to their school board member to approve the new budget for West Lake Elementary for the coming year. At a time when we’re seeing test scores dropping, countless students badly in need of individualized learning programs, and an obesity and health epidemic ravaging the country, we need to be investing in our young people more than ever. The current budget proposal is not radical, it is merely an extension of the typical 5% growth rate we have tried to maintain each year.
While I have heard many loud voices clamoring for cuts and rollbacks, I would ask these committee members to consider how much funding we have given to the Business Bureau this past year, or how many thousands of dollars we’ve wasted on speculative land surveys designed to attract corporate developers who most townspeople would rather stayed far away. Let’s get our priorities straight. We can find lots of programs to cut for the fiscal year, but the schools should never be on the list.
